I agree with the position that I think you express - in my words: that we should seek to proactively both significantly reduce our impacts, and develop more natural methods of coping.
You also say :"While I understand the desire to do more research, I don’t see how it would be beneficial". To me the benefit is that it would provide a back stop escape in the very possible event that we abysmally fail at the first two approaches
