I met a man two years ago (a guest at a B&B my wife and I were staying at) who was working on farm automation and crop production. He said that the primary problem is some crops like fruit don't do well with automatic harvesting. And that fruit are being bred to be more robust to survive the automation process and becoming less flavorful as a result. So there is definitely a trade off.
Very interesting, I didn’t know about that. That’s definitely a problem. Maybe there’s a different kind of machine that needs to be created to be less harsh on fruits during harvesting. Or just leave that part of the job to humans.
