The whole AI field is concerning to me. I don’t like software having the ability to “think.” It is already hurting creative types like illustrators. I imagine many more jobs will be lost in several fields. It will probably write web copy and ads eventually. And of course, we know that what was once science fiction can become science fact. Satellites for example. IPhones, etc. Those old movies about robot takeovers may end up being true. Machine have no moral compass (of course, neither do most large corporations.) 😉

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mark! I've been thinking a lot about AI's impact across different jobs/industries, especially on artists/illustrators. I'm going to share my thoughts on how we can make AI help artists instead of replacing them in this week's newsletter.

Software has been helping artist create images more easily for years, but AI art seems like it is designed to replace artists, not assist them. And if it "scrapes" artwork to produce results, it does it by stealing other's art.

I know some say AI can be used by artists (and it may be useful in some limited extent), but if anyone can use it create art, then there will be little need for "real" artists. We all become artists. It seems more like a justification by non-artists using it.

But that is the way of things. Most jobs get replaced by some form of technology at some point. The printing press put scribes out of work. No one take shorthand anymore. No one does typesetting anymore. Home many jobs have been lost to robotics? Countless.

It just saddens me that AI is invading creative fields. And soon the arts may no longer be viable "jobs." Only curiosities and hobbies.

Just because we can do something, doesn't mean we necessarily should. But that never stopped anyone. 😂

Good thoughts Mark. One of my characters in my near-future science fiction thriller is a smart AI/(AGI). There are some insights I've had to accept regarding, "moral compass" and I even hash some it out in my books. As you suggest we should not be disheartened when inanimate objects like corporations or machines lack moral compasses, but it is historically religion and/or culture which establish morality in the first place and it's safe to say we have seen a wholesale rejection of both those entities. No more guardrails for humanity... What could go wrong?

“I ain’t afraid of no Terminator.” 😂

People used to think aliens or nuclear weapons would end the world. But it may be more likely to be software.

In the 70s we used to say don't trust anybody over 30. Now it will have to be don't trust computers over 30 qubits.

Also, really? Justine Moore bringing up Clippy after all these years? May it rest in peace and never return—IMHO—Clippy was an obnoxious pain and the world is safer now.

Oh no what did Clippy do to you? 🤣

I was pretty young when it came out and I liked it because it felt cartoonish and fun. Never used it for serious work

Clippy popped up and interrupted the flow. My comment was maybe too harsh. I shut it off and mostly had no further interaction with it. I didn't mind the dog that much. Rover?

Interesting stuff. This is just the newest rabbit hole. I've played with both chatGPT and midjourney. It does not take long to figure out a way to use AI to make something I want to do—easier to do. And it seems that is the point of working smarter, not harder (my motto). However, we are no more prepared to keep AI from wrecking our lives than we were with social media. Like all tech advancements, it is wonderful and sucks at the same time.

"It is wonderful and sucks at the same time" is a good way to put it
